Early Years Foundation Stage - EYFS

At Beighton Nursery Infant School we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life.  At this fundamental age the development of the whole child is essential. So the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and cultural aspects of each child’s life are considered and respected.

Our EYFS provision consists of a 78 place Nursery and a three-form entry Reception. In the EYFS we believe that children learn best through a balance of play based activities, first hand experiences, as well as carefully planned adult directed tasks. They have the opportunity to think creatively, investigate and solve problems both individually and within a group. We believe that each child is unique and is valued as an individual.

Our early years setting follows the curriculum as outlined in the latest version of the EYFS statutory framework that applies from September 2021, we have chosen to use the revised ‘Development Matters’ to support our curriculum development.

The EYFS framework includes 7 areas of learning and development that are equally important and inter-connected. However, 3 areas known as the prime areas are seen as particularly important for igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building children’s capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The prime areas are:

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

  • Personal, social and emotional development

The prime areas are strengthened and applied through 4 specific areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design

We also take into account the characteristics for effective learning, we use the following learning characters to promote positive learning behaviours with the children;

  • Exploring Elmer

  • Focused Fox

  • Have a go Hercules

  • Resilient Rex

  • Problem Solving Pirates

  • Teamwork Trolls
